By David Gwambe (Abuja)

What is a boarding school

A boarding school or house is a system of learning whereby the students are compelled to live in their school premises being guided by a boarding master or a matron, and staffs that stay within the school compound .

What is a gender based boarding school

A gender based boarding House is a boarding school consisting of only a particular gender (Male or female)

Some of the disadvantages are ;

Gender disparity This is a social or economic condition that is considered to be unfairly unequalSingle-gender classrooms or schools could make children feel they are superior to the other sex, and that promotes gender disparity. This attitude, in the long run, causes problems when they are working side by side. “Children usually tend to be shy around each other or are just too curious about each other.

Single-gender interactions:

While single-gender classrooms provide a relaxed ambiance for children’s interaction with their own gender, it is different in the real world, where boys and girls must interact and work with each other. When they are used to interacting only with one gender in school compound, the awkwardness and newness of the experience make it difficult for boys and girls to interact and converse with each other comfortably.Creates Gender stereotypes :Stereotypes is a simplified, widely held belief about a group of people or thingsHow stereotypes can be harmfulStereotypes can lead to prejudice and discrimination. Stereotypes can limit people, assign them roles they aren’t suited to, and make it hard for them to be their true selves. Studies have shown that single-gender classrooms foster gender stereotypes. Both genders start thinking they are better than the other. “There is strong evidence for negative consequences of segregating by sex — the collateral damage of segregating by sex,” said Lynn S Liben, Professor of Psychology, Human Development and Family Studies, and Education, Penn State in a report ‘Sex segregation in schools detrimental to equality’, published in Science Daily in 2011.Lacks

Diversity:

In single-gender classrooms, the boys or girls do not have the opportunity to listen to perspectives and gain a broader understanding of each other which causes more harm when they are in the outside world.

Homosexuality and lesbianism

Homosexuality describes a man’s attraction towards his gender. It can also refer to romantic or sexual behavior between people of the same sex due to lack of exposure to the opposite gender Lesbianism is defined as a sexual behavior between two females All these social vices happens to majority of the students in single-gender classrooms and some end up being cultists
